Cheerleading Commissioner
Solomons Steelers Cheerleading Season begins around August 1st and runs through the end of November. The total number of games cheered for will be based on the Football Teams/Divisions. Typically there are 8 regular season games, and any additional games will include pre season games, playoffs, and SMYAC Championships. Cheer squads will also typically compete in 1 - 3 Competitions per season, at the discretion of the Cheer Team Coach and Commissioner.
Cheerleaders are placed on squads based on their birth year and level of skill, to allow us to balance squads with an adequate number of cheerleaders and ensure proper instruction and coaching. The Solomons Steelers cheer program provides an age-specific opportunity to those children, ages 4-14 years old, interested in beginning and advancing within the sport. All decisions on placement will be decided by the Cheer Commissioner based on squad availability/capacity.
Solomons Steelers provides uniforms (skirt/shell) for all cheerleaders. Uniforms will be handed out at a designated time once practices start. A uniform deposit fee may be required at the time the uniform is issued ($150). Uniform (shell/skirt) must be returned at the end of the season or at the time a cheerleader is no longer participating in the program. If the uniform is not returned, clean and undamaged, parents are responsible for full payment of the uniform.
Online registration gives an option to pay A-La-Carte for 'Cheer Kit' items below. Sample sizes will be available at on-site registration for MANDATORY cheer kit items, to include:
Body Liner (aka Crop Top)
Cheer Briefs (aka Kick Pants)
Cheer Shoes
Poms
Season Bow and Pink Awareness Bow are included in the registration cost.
Official practices start the first week of August and occur 2-3 days per week depending on the age group and coaching staff.
You will be contacted by your cheer coach prior to the start of practice. There is typically a Cheerleading "Meet and Greet" the first week of practice, where teams and parents will meet their coaches and get an overview of the Steelers cheer program.
Practices are at Cove Point Park for the first part of the season. Cheer practices move indoors in October, and are held at one of the local schools or churches. The indoor practices are staffed by Steelers coaches and team managers, Calvert County Parks & Rec staff, and closed to parents.
Cheer Schedules will be produced once the Football Season Schedule is available. Games are typically played on Saturdays, and start in late August or early September. The SMYAC Board does the overall game schedule for the league. The schedule is developed in mid-late August once all football teams are submitted to SMYAC, and we do our very best to get the schedule out to our teams as soon as it is available.
The Steelers Cheer program has a long and successful history of competing at several cheer competitions, both in Calvert County as well other parts of Maryland. Each cheer team will compete in at least one local cheer competition each fall, along with other SMYAC organizations, usually scheduled in November. This competition fee is included in your registration. Most cheer teams also participate in 1-2 competitions through Cheer and Dance Extreme or other event providers. This cost is not included in the registration, however the Steelers have fundraising opportunities to offset the cost. Look for more information on competitions in July and once practices are underway.
