The Southern Maryland Youth Athletic Conference (SMYAC) season runs from August 1st to mid-November, followed by the SMYAC Classic playoffs for those teams that qualify. The top 4-6 teams in each division (depending on number of teams) qualify for the SMYAC Classic playoffs.
The following organizations participate in SMYAC:
Huntingtown Hurricanes (HYC), Beach Buccaneers (BB), Prince Frederick Eagles (PFE), Mechanicsville Braves (MB), Leonardtown Wildcats (LTW), Pax River Raiders (PRR), La Plata Blue Knights (LPBK), Waldorf Wildcats (WW), Southern Maryland Hawks (SMH), St Charles Bears (SCB), King George, VA Foxes (KG), and Marlboro Mustangs (MM).
Tackle Football - Ages 6 - 14 years
Flag Football (Fall season) - Ages 4 - 5 years
ALL tackle age groups are UNLIMITED WEIGHT, and teams are based on Age.
The league requires every Tackle Football Player to have a State ID (preferred), Passport, or Military ID, which must be presented before every game in order to participate in the game. If your child does not have one of these items they will not be allowed to play in that game.
State ID Cards are issued by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) and can be done by appointment at one of the locations in southern MD. Visit the MVA website for more information and to make an appointment!
If you are unable to obtain one of these items due to circumstances such as adoption, foster parenting, or any other reason, please inform the Steelers President as soon as possible.
The regular season starts in late August or early September, and is typically 8-10 games, followed by playoffs (for those teams that qualify). Playoffs begin in early to mid-November and are usually done in about 2 weeks.
Most games are played on Saturdays. However, teams may play weekday evening games on occasion, or in the event of inclement weather or make-up games.
Players will be evaluated by Head Coaches and coaching staff during the initial days of practice to determine potential positions, and placement on teams if there are enough registered players to form more than one team at an age group.
Practices start the first week of August, and are typically held 4 nights a week in August, from 6PM to 8PM. The number of practices during the week will decrease once school starts, typically 2-3 nights/week. Each age group and team is different. Coaches will inform families of the practice schedule, location, and any changes.
Practice is usually held at Southern Middle School (SMS) in Lusby, MD, at the beginning of the season. Practices will move to Cove Point Park (CPP) sometime in September. Coaches will inform the team of any location changes.
Players will be placed on teams in early August. Practices are usually held 1 - 3 nights per week in August, scheduled at the discretion of the Coaches.
Our equipment shed is located at the front of Cove Point Park next to the basketball courts. This is where equipment is issued prior to the start of the season. Once your equipment is issued, if you have problems or questions, please inform your Coach, who will assess if different equipment is needed. Don’t hesitate to ask!
Please Note—Players must return all issued equipment at the end of the season. Failure to do so will result in Solomons Steelers charging parents/guardians a replacement fee for each unreturned item.
Helmets—our helmets are either brand new or newly re-conditioned. Our football equipment managers are certified and will fit your child for a proper size helmet.
Shoulder pads—shoulder pads are fitted by our equipment managers or qualified coaches.
Practice pants—7-piece pad sets integrated pants.
Practice jersey – practice jersey will be either gold or black depending on the age group.
Basic mouth piece—we will provide each player a basic mouth piece. Athletes are welcome to use their own mouthpiece, as long as it meets the minimum safety standards for the league.
Game pants – may be borrowed from the inventory on hand.
Game jerseys – must be purchased, and they are yours to keep.
Players will receive a Game Day Jersey, and will also need to have a mouth piece. Cleats are preferred, but players may also wear sneakers. Talk to your Coaches about other uniform/equipment needs, and if you have any questions.
